This is against the spirit of entrepreneurship according to the belief. Suppose two conditions for a particular painter:
In the first condition, the painter has a specific painting in mind, he takes a painstaking effort to collect all the equipment necessary to paint that painting. He assembles a canvas, some oil paints, and brushes which are specifically made for that style of painting that the painter wants to paint.
(Now this one is a clear-cut example of traditional entrepreneurship, let me tell you how?
- He has a specific painting in mind which he wants to paint = Entrepreneur’s idea of a specific business venture and has some specific goals which he wants to fulfill.
- He sorts out all the specific equipment needed for that kind of painting which he wants to paint = Entrepreneur’s quest for all the resources which are necessary for the specified kind of venture which is in the entrepreneur’s mind.
Now that painter has collected everything he needs for that kind of picture, neither he nor anyone else can be sure of the fact that he will “certainly” paint that kind of painting which is in his mind. It may or may not be possible for him to imitate the exact kind of painting. So,
- He might paint the exact perfect painting or might not = Entrepreneur’s chance of success in the venture of his interest.
In order to avoid this improbability and risky scenario, the principle of effectuation in entrepreneurship comes forward for aid. Now,
- The Painter has no specific idea about the kind of painting he wants to paint = A new entrepreneur who has no specific business plan.
- Painter paints instantly on the basis of whatever is present in front of him = Entrepreneur works solely on the basis of the resources which are present before him at the moment and doesn’t go for long searches.
- Painting might be good or might be bad = Entrepreneur’s venture becomes successful or might not.
The difference which is presented between the two cases is that in the first case,
- The painter makes use of his skills+sorts out resources ( he has to do a lot of effort) = Entrepreneur has to use skills and resources which means a lot of effort for the venture.
Whereas, in the second case,
- Painter uses his skills + doesn’t search for resources specifically as he makes use of the available resources = Entrepreneur used his skills but didn’t go on the resource hunt.
So, if in the first case despite working so hard the painter/entrepreneur fails, the loss will be immense as the painter/entrepreneur has searched for the resources specifically.
But, in the second case, the painter/entrepreneur hasn’t used many resources, so despite the failure, the loss would not be huge. This is exactly why the effectuation in entrepreneurship is considered i-e: to play safe and avoid maximum loss.
Sarasvathy’s Model Of Effectuation In Entrepreneurship
Sarasvathy not only highlighted the loss but also proposed a model consisting of five principles that are easier to incorporate into business ventures. These plans can also be used to train new entrepreneurs who have just knocked at the entrepreneurial door.
It signifies the use of individual skills for the success of a business venture. The name itself indicates the nature of the principle.
A pilot who is controlling a plane has the skills enough to take the plane wherever and in any direction in which he wants to.
Without skills, the plane won’t be able to stay under control. So, the first principle says that “Your skills are the deciding factors that enable you to take your business venture in the direction you want to.”
With your efforts, you can easily avail the right kind of opportunities and can enhance the growth of your venture.
This principle focuses on the importance of resources that are available to you. In other words, if you want to be a credible entrepreneur, you must learn the art of using those few resources which are available to you right at the present moment.
Running to create resources of your interest will not work every time. Sometimes, you have to be content with whatever is available to you at the moment.
You can not always blame the situation if things didn’t turn out well. Sometimes, there are hidden lessons in failures. Sometimes, the failed ventures can lead to the base of a unique venture.
